Whichever language you are completing education in, it will benefit you to take a language course in that language. Reading and writing are integral to access any subject and English language courses focus on extending these skills.
Comprehension skills such as reading for meaning, making inferences and deductions, and extracting information from a text, when taught explicitly, are beneficial for the study of all subjects, both in school and for lifelong learning. All learning includes an aspect of reading, and the more effectively you can do that, the more efficiently you can learn.
Even in mathematics, arguably the least literacy based subject, you need to be able to read and comprehend written problems, drawing out pertinent information in order to apply it to other situations.
